How to Treat Hip Flexor Strain with Kinetic Massage

Hip flexor strains are common injuries that can cause pain and discomfort in the hip and groin area. These muscles, which include the iliopsoas and rectus femoris, help lift the leg and bend the hip. Moving or performing daily activities without pain can be difficult when they become strained or torn.

One treatment option for hip flexor strains is kinetic massage, which involves using targeted massage techniques to improve movement and reduce pain. This type of massage is based on the principles of kinetic chain analysis, which looks at how the body's movements are connected and how they may affect each other. By focusing on the hip flexor muscles and surrounding tissues, kinetic massage can help restore proper function to the hip and alleviate pain.

Here are some steps to follow when using kinetic massage to treat a hip flexor strain:

Start by warming up the muscles: Before you begin the massage, it's essential to warm up the muscles to help improve blood flow and reduce the risk of injury. You can perform gentle stretches or a heating pad or warm compress on the affected area.

Identify the areas of tension: Using your hands or a massage tool, feel for areas of tension or tightness in the hip flexor muscles and surrounding tissues. Pay attention to any tension or trigger points causing pain or discomfort. A special focus on the iliacus muscle in the iliac fossa or on the ramus can be beneficial. Do not forget to include the rectus femoris and sometime the TFL might be involved.

Use a variety of massage techniques: Several different massage techniques can be effective for treating hip flexor strains, including effleurage (stroking), petrissage (kneading), and friction (deep circular motions) on the rectus femoris belly and attachment. PNF works exceptionally well for all hip flexors. It can be done at the beginning or the end of the treatment. Experiment with different techniques to see what works best for you.

Focus on the trigger points: Trigger points are specific areas in the muscle that are particularly sensitive and can cause pain when pressed. By focusing on the iliacus, TFL and rectus femoris during the massage, you can help reduce tension and improve movement in the hip.

Use pressure according to your comfort level: Use the right amount during the massage, as too much pressure can cause pain or discomfort. Use the muscle base as a guide: press against the muscle until you feel tissue resistance and slightly back off. Adapt your pressure depending on the feeling of the base. Make sure the muscle base is not a vulnerable structure such as blood vessels, nerves, or sharp and unstable bone. Start with a light touch and gradually increase the pressure as needed. If you experience pain or discomfort, reduce the pressure or stop the massage.

Finish with some stretches: After the massage, take some time to stretch the hip flexor muscles to help improve flexibility and reduce the risk of future injuries. Some good stretches include the lunge stretch and the pigeon pose.

Following these steps, you can use kinetic massage to treat a hip flexor strain effectively and improve your overall hip function. Always listen to your body and stop the massage if you experience pain or discomfort. If you want to learn kinetic massage of the hip online, we can help; click here to learn more.
